They are keen to explain and help with everything. I was fortunate enough to be "adopted" by my then boyfriend's amazing family. Mother in law was not happy to get a foreign daughter-in, but we became fast friends when the worst culture shock was over. It took some time before it dawned on me how difficult it is to actually start from scratch in Spain. The whole society is built on the fact that you should not do it. The life style is spontaneous, but the actual planning of life is just the opposite. Swedish youth work a couple of years, fat burning furnace then studying, traveling abroad, rent apartment, changing city, is cohabiting, have children when they feel like it, get married if they want so. In Spain, all this is much more complicated. More on that tomorrow.
Oops, did I recognized myself in the culture clash-post. I was really a breath of fresh air when I got into my guy's family. And as you write, it has found many things that were okay that I made, because I was Swedish, foreign. Now living unfortunately not my in-laws anymore (which is sad for Danielle) but I've been through a lot of cultural clashes regarding our future wedding (we're not married!), Our future children's names, baptisms, etc. It took several years before I came into the Spanish family and thought it was okay to listen to everyone's fat burning furnace comments, opinions, gossip and thoughts about my life and how I ought to live it. It will be exciting to see how great-grandmother and the rest of the family react when we come down, just a few weeks. If they put in (too much) and I start climbing the walls ... While she found the life I lived, with their own jobs and mobility, was quite enviable. She was very intelligent, but was not allowed to study further, could not drive and so on.
